Veterinarian Shelyakov: Dog owners are advised to be vigilant during walks

Messages have appeared on social networks about the activities of dog hunters in the Moscow districts of Izmailovo and Presnya. So, according to a local resident, her dog became weak and depressed after sniffing pink snow. A veterinarian of the highest qualification category, Mikhail Shelyakov, expressed doubts about this story, since, in his opinion, dog hunters prefer to act secretly.

According to Shelyakov, pink snow is more of a myth. The substance isoniazid, of course, exists, but dog hunters are very inventive and will not just paint the snow. In addition, the dog must eat a significant amount of this snow, but an ordinary dog will not eat it, writes ridus.ru.

“Doghunters are very inventive. They secretly make their baits. These can be cutlets, sausages, and so disguised that a person will not see them, but a dog will smell them. They even add anti-emetic components to their poisons, so that if the dog swallows the bait, it cannot be induced to vomit on the spot. Pink snow is more of a horror story,” the veterinarian explained.

The first sign of isoniazid poisoning is changes in the dog’s behavior. For example, a calm and phlegmatic dog may begin to make sudden movements, accelerate and fall. Or, conversely, a happy dog may become sad and show signs of discomfort.

If there is a suspicion that the dog has been poisoned, you need to act as follows.

“The first step is to induce vomiting in your pet. “The best thing is hydrogen peroxide diluted in half with water. Give it inside. Usually vomiting occurs immediately, but, again, now all dog hunters know about this, that vomiting is the first principle of detoxification of the body, so they often add anti-emetic pills to poisons,” explained Mikhail Shelyakov.

The second step is vitamin therapy.

“The antidote for isoniazid is vitamin B6. It must be injected immediately at the rate of one milliliter per 1 kg of animal weight. It seems like a lot, if, say, a dog weighs 40 kg, for example, then 40 ampoules should be injected subcutaneously at once, but, in fact, there is nothing terrible here. Even if you injected in vain, your fears turned out to be in vain, you went overboard, as they say, such massive vitamin therapy is one-time, it will not harm the health of the animal,” the veterinarian added.

After this, you need to contact a veterinarian; this will never be superfluous, the expert concluded.
