The Russian Foreign Ministry summoned the charge d’affaires of Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania due to possible incidents during the Russian presidential elections in March of this year. The corresponding commentary from the official representative of the Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, appeared on the Foreign Ministry website. At the same time, the commentary emphasizes that the Russian side did not see a “proper reaction” to requests to the Baltic authorities regarding security at voting stations on the territory of embassies.
Zakharova refers to the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961, according to which the host state is obliged to protect the diplomatic mission of a foreign country. The Foreign Ministry warned that Russian citizens permanently residing in Latvia, Lithuania or Estonia may react extremely negatively to the ban on embassy voting in elections. According to Zakharova, the Russians, in the event of sabotage, can organize mass rallies to defend constitutional rights. At the same time, Moscow placed full responsibility for the consequences of the actions on the Baltic countries.
Let us remind you that the presidential elections in the Russian Federation will be held from March 15 to 17, 2024. As of January 1 of this year, the total number of voters was 112.31 million people. At the same time, 1.89 million people are outside Russia.
