President Zelenskiy enables politically persecuted Russians to obtain Ukrainian citizenship

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a law simplifying the acquisition of Ukrainian citizenship for citizens of the Russian Federation who are persecuted for political reasons. This was reported on the official website of the head of state.

Now, in order to become a citizen of Ukraine in a simplified manner, it is enough to submit an application and a declaration confirming the renunciation of foreign citizenship.

Similar changes are envisaged for citizens of other states who “have outstanding services to Ukraine” or participated in the military operation in Donbass on the side of the Ukrainian authorities.

At the same time, according to Ukrainian experts, the adoption of this law may lead to new problems. If the situation is relatively clear with persons who fought in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, then the opportunity to obtain Ukrainian citizenship for political reasons can allegedly be used by the Russian special services, which are deploying their agents in Ukraine. Such a possibility is admitted by Mikhail Samus, deputy director of the Center for Army Research, Conversion and Disarmament, who reported on the Dom TV channel that “Ukrainian counterintelligence should conduct a check of potential Russian spies”.
