The film “The Master and Margarita” collected more than ₽1 billion at the box office in just two weeks, according to data from the UAIS State Cinema Fund. This is the first domestic film production with the “18+” mark that has collected such a large amount in such a short time.
Previously, only the Russian “Viking” managed to collect more than ₽1 billion rubles, being an “18+” film. This happened in 2016. However, the film was released with restrictions not only “18+”, but also “12+”, so the UAIS took into account data for both versions of the film together. In addition, among the record holders of films for adults and older in Russia is “Joker” (2019). During its premiere, it grossed ₽1.9 billion at the domestic box office.
UAIS has been keeping records of revenue from film screenings since 2015. Over the entire period, only nine foreign films managed to cross the ₽1 billion mark.
Let us remind you that the Russian-American director Mikhail Lokshin shot the sixth version of Mikhail Bulgakov’s novel “The Master and Margarita”. The role of the Master went to Evgeny Tsyganov, Margarita was played by Yulia Snegir. Among the main stars of the film are German actor August Diehl, who starred in Quentin Tarantino’s cult film Inglourious Basterds, in the role of Woland, as well as Leonid Yarmolnik, who played the role of Doctor Stravinsky.
