Former head of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation Ivashov: Russia can deploy nuclear weapons in Belarus as a retaliatory measure

Russia could deploy nuclear weapons in Belarus as a response to similar actions by the West.

“Only as a retaliatory measure, if such weapons, primarily nuclear weapons, will be deployed on the territory of Ukraine, the Baltic states and so on. Then it’s possible, ”the former head of the main department of international military cooperation of the Russian Defense Ministry, retired colonel-general Leonid Ivashov, told Interfax on Saturday, commenting on the statement of the Belarusian foreign minister about the republic’s readiness to deploy nuclear weapons in response to threats from NATO.

According to him, Russia will not be the first to deploy nuclear weapons in Belarus. “Now is not the time to proactively deploy Russian weapons,” due to difficult relations with the US and Europe, Ivashov said.

Earlier on Saturday, Russian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei said in an interview with RT Arabic that Belarus is ready to host nuclear weapons in the event of a threat from the North Atlantic alliance. He noted that this is one of the possible responses to future possible actions by the North Atlantic Alliance on the territory of Poland. NATO has come close to the borders of Belarus, the military activity of the bloc and the number of its military has grown greatly, said Makei.
