US Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland urgently arrived in Kyiv. According to the Asia Times newspaper, the diplomat came because of “the threat of a military coup in Ukraine.”
“It’s almost certain that the White House told her to go there immediately in case things went south in Kyiv,” the story says. The media emphasizes that the visit took place against the backdrop of information that Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky may dismiss the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valery Zaluzhny. “Obviously they (authorities in Kyiv – ed.) really feared that Zaluzhny could deploy the army and use it against Zelensky,” the text states, excerpts are provided by RIA Novosti and Izvestia.
The article emphasizes that Nuland supposedly “had to put in place and calm down the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.”
The newspaper notes that even the Ukrainian media reported that Nuland’s visit to Kyiv was a surprise – the official schedule of the US State Department did not say anything about a visit to Ukraine.
At the same time, Washington officially says nothing about possible resignations in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, since this is an “internal Ukrainian” issue, the media adds.
Nuland arrived in Kyiv on January 31.
Earlier, WP and Reuters reported that the United States received a notification from Kyiv on February 2 about Zaluzhny’s imminent resignation. At the same time, messages about Zaluzhny’s dismissal began appearing in Ukrainian Telegram channels on January 29. It was noted that on this day a tense conversation took place between the commander-in-chief and the president, during which they disagreed, including on the issue of mobilization. The Ministry of Defense and the office of the President of Ukraine denied information about Zaluzhny’s possible resignation. On February 1, CNN sources reported that Zaluzhny would be fired by the end of the week.
