Rosstat: Obesity ranks fourth among causes of death in the Russian Federation

According to Rosstat, the proportion of Russian residents who have problems with excess weight is growing every year. In 2023, three regions with the largest number of adult residents suffering from this problem were identified, ridus.ru reports.

According to a sample study of the health status of Russians over the past year, more than 42% of the Russian population are overweight. More than half of them (51%) are men. However, extreme obesity of the third degree, morbid obesity, is more often observed in women – such cases in the country are 2.1%.

A study of the health status of the population made it possible to identify the top regions of Russia in terms of the problem of obesity among adults: Oryol region – 34.4%, Kurgan region – 32.6%, Omsk region – 32.4%. The Smolensk and Belgorod regions are slightly behind the top three, where 32.2% of the population have problems with obesity. About 31% of overweight residents were identified in the Kirov, Lipetsk, Bryansk, Tula and Pskov regions.

Scientists say obesity is the fourth leading cause of death, as it is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes and various types of cancer.

Common causes of obesity include decreased physical activity, an inactive lifestyle, abuse of alcohol, sweets and fast food, a large amount of stress, as well as improper sleep and wakefulness.

As previously reported, scientists have concluded that obesity is associated with an increased risk of developing cancer of the digestive system.
