In Italy, a naval officer was sentenced to 29 years in prison for transmitting classified information to Russia

The military tribunal of Rome sentenced an Italian Navy officer to 29 years and two months in prison for collaborating with Russian intelligence services through the Italian Russian Embassy. ANSA agency reports this. According to the military leadership, the officer regularly passed on secret information to diplomats and received money for it.

Walter Biot, 58, has been in custody since March 30, 2021. Then the officer was arrested by the police while transferring secret information about the state of NATO armed forces to a Russian embassy employee. The meeting took place in one of the Roman parking lots. The police found money and a gadget with secret information on Biot.

According to investigators, the man was in close contact with embassy workers. The Russian side was interested in obtaining data on the condition of NATO military equipment. Biot had access to some classified documents of the alliance. According to the investigation, the officer photographed the contents of the papers and passed the information on to Russian diplomats. In total, Biot obtained 113 documents marked “secret,” “confidential,” and “very confidential.”

In March last year, Biot was given 30 years in prison, but the defendant’s defense prepared an appeal. The military’s lawyers insisted that the investigation did not conduct a single check, but at the same time classified the progress of the investigation.
