The International Skating Union (ISU) has stripped Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva of her gold medal for winning the 2022 European Championships. The corresponding decision was published on the official website of the organization. Instead of Valieva, another figure skater from Russia, Anna Shcherbakova, received the title.
In addition, after Valieva’s suspension, Russian Alexandra Trusova took second place in the European competition. The bronze went to the Belgian athlete Luna Hendricks. A bronze award was also awarded to the Russian team ice team performance for their performance at the 2022 Beijing Olympics. However, Valieva’s personal results were reset to zero.
Earlier, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled to ban Valieva from competition for four years for intentional doping. The court decision emphasizes that the countdown of punishment begins on December 25, 2021. At the same time, the figure skater’s defense argued that the drug trimetazidine found in the girl’s anti-doping sample could have virtually no effect on the athlete’s performance. According to lawyers, this drug was allegedly used by Valieva’s grandfather, and not by the skater herself. The skater’s side denied all accusations.
Let us remind you that the Kremlin considers CAS decisions to be political. The Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) also did not agree with Valieva’s punishment. They called this approach of CAS a “war” against Russian athletes.
