Putin and Lukashenko agreed to create a Russian-Belarusian media holding

Russian President Vladimir Putin and President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko agreed to create a joint Russian-Belarusian media holding under the auspices of the Union State (US), RIA Novosti reports. The corresponding document was adopted during a meeting of the Supreme State Council (SSC) of the two countries in St. Petersburg on Monday.

At the same time, Lukashenko doubted the effectiveness of the functioning of the media sphere within the Union State. The President of Belarus emphasized that there is now an information confrontation, hinting at a confrontation between Western countries and Russia. According to Lukashenko, the new media holding will improve the work of Belarusian and Russian media; journalists will comprehensively report on events in Belarus and Russia, since people should receive information from a single media outlet.

In turn, the Minister of Digital Development of the Russian Federation Maksut Shadayev said that the new media project is designed to unite existing media within the Union State. In particular, it is proposed to merge two weekly newspapers, a television channel and a weekly magazine into a single holding.

Earlier, Putin called for fighting “the propaganda of neo-Nazis and their pro-Western patrons” in new Russian regions. According to the Russian President, such propaganda is aimed at undermining stability and dividing citizens.

Let us recall that the agreement on the creation of the Union State of Russia and the Republic of Belarus was signed on December 8, 1999. The Supreme State Council is the highest supranational body of the State Council. The leaders of the two countries have repeatedly called for increasing the efficiency of the functioning of cooperation mechanisms within the Union State.
