Some popular home methods for treating cough can harm the body and worsen the patient’s condition, newslab.ru reports, citing the chief freelance pulmonologist and allergist of the Ministry of Health of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, Irina Demko.
The doctor listed mustard plasters and cups, as well as inhalations and hot potato steam as ineffective treatment practices. According to her, there will be no benefit from this, but getting a burn to the respiratory tract or other problems is quite possible. Demko also warned against uncontrolled inhalation of herbs.
Another popular “grandmother’s” treatment method is going to the sauna using fir, eucalyptus oil and other oils. “After such manipulations, we then see patients with severe respiratory failure who develop so-called hypersensitivity pneumonitis with severe shortness of breath, including resuscitation,” warns the specialist.
If you have a persistent cough, reminds Irina Demko, you should consult a doctor. It is he who must assess the patient’s condition and decide which drugs can be used in this case – those that depress the cough center or stimulate a wet cough for better sputum discharge.
