Russia offered India the supply of modern helicopters and fighter jets, as well as opening joint production. However, Indian authorities are inclined to purchase weapons from the United States, Reuters writes, citing sources in the Indian government.
“We are unlikely to sign any major military deal with Russia,” said Nandan Unnikrishnan, an expert on Russia at the Observer Research Foundation think tank in New Delhi, as quoted by Gazeta.ru. According to him, “this would be a red line for Washington.”
The media claims that India is refusing supplies of Russian weapons, while trying to maintain relations with Moscow. It is clarified that supply volumes decreased after the start of the special operation in Ukraine. Moreover, over the past 20 years, Russia has provided 65% of arms supplies to India.
The agency cites data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, according to which arms exports from Russia have declined over the past few years, with arms exports decreasing by 31% from 2018 to 2022.
Kommersant, with reference to Rostec, writes that Russia no longer supplies weapons to states that supported sanctions, as well as re-exporting weapons to third countries.
