Ecuador and Colombia homologate vaccination certificates against COVID-19 to improve mobility at the border

The measure, which began to take effect this Friday, was announced by the health ministers of both countries.

The governments of Colombia and Ecuador approved this Friday the vaccination certificates against covid-19, which will allow better mobility after they opened the Rumichaca bridge, the main passage between the two countries, which was closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. .

The measure, which began to take effect this Friday, was announced by the Ministers of Health of Ecuador, Ximena Garzón, and of Colombia, Fernando Ruiz, during the X Binational Cabinet held in Cartagena de Indias and which was headed by Presidents Iván Duque and Guillermo Lasso.

“We are standardizing our vaccination certificates, which implies that both countries have the same data, the same information,” explained the head of the Ecuadorian Health portfolio.

The certificates, which can be read with a QR code on any mobile device, will have basic information on citizens such as the name and surname of the bearer, the doses of vaccines that have been applied to them and the laboratories where the serums come from.

The ministers stressed that the homologation of this document, valid in both countries, will speed up the transit of people, especially those who pass through the border.

It will also facilitate tourism and trade, contributing to the recovery of economies hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

“We have made the decision to homologate our two vaccination certificates, that of Ecuador and Colombia and in that sense it is important that people who live on the borders of our two countries know and recognize the certificate that is delivered in the other country”, said Minister Ruiz.

Last Wednesday, Ecuador and Colombia reopened their land border to the passage, up to 11 kilometers, of heavy-duty truck drivers.

This is a measure to facilitate the transport of goods between the two countries that have a common border, 586 kilometers long.

Ecuador and Colombia closed their common border in March 2020 with the declaration of a state of emergency due to the coronavirus pandemic, and in September of that year they opened it to the passage of goods through a special transshipment protocol.
