Hungary may approve the creation of a military assistance fund for Ukraine using funds from all EU members, Bloomberg news agency reports, citing an official representative of Budapest. The total amount of assistance will be €5 billion. The fund will be raised from the funds of all members of the European Union.
Hungary, according to the news agency, will support the creation of a European fund for military and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine. At the same time, Budapest emphasized that they have not yet decided on a decision on a new aid package for Kiev from the EU in the amount of €50 billion. Part of this money (€33 billion) consists of European loans, the rest (€17 billion) is various grants, including including Hungarian, and financial investments for the development of Ukraine until 2027. Last December, Viktor Orban did not allow the EU to allocate these funds to Kyiv.
Let us remind you that Brussels is considering the possibility of creating other channels for financing Ukrainian aid in order to circumvent Budapest’s veto in subsequent packages. At the same time, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Economic Relations of Hungary, Peter Szijjártó, stated that his country would refuse to supply arms to Ukraine with money from the European Peace Fund (EPF). However, the minister emphasized that other EU countries can help Kyiv with weapons if they consider it necessary. Hungary does not oppose such actions.
In addition, Orban proposed that the EU create a separate independent fund to help Ukraine. He is confident that funds to support Kyiv need to be spent more wisely than is being done now. At the same time, the Hungarian prime minister emphasized that he in no way refuses to “make his contribution” to helping the Ukrainian authorities.
