Putin announced an increase in scholarships for students and promised to smoothly change the educational system

Russian President Vladimir Putin at a meeting with students of the Baltic State University. I. Kanta (IKBFU) spoke about the importance of obtaining higher education and agreed to increase student scholarships, Vedomosti reports with reference to the Kremlin’s Telegram channel.

According to the president, now 70% of schoolchildren want to go to higher education institutions, although 10 years ago the statistics were significantly lower – only half of the graduates went to universities. Putin connected this trend with the country’s policy, which, in his opinion, is aimed at attracting young people to universities. The government is trying to expand the number of budget places at universities and is increasing scholarships and grant support in every possible way. In particular, Putin announced that the size of the presidential scholarship will increase to 30 thousand rubles. The government scholarship will be at the level of 20 thousand rubles.

Putin also remembered the times of the Soviet Union. Back then, young people sought to obtain higher education no less actively than today, the president assured. He also spoke sympathetically about his “working family”, thanks to which he went to university and received a higher education. Putin believes that schoolchildren should strive for knowledge and think independently in conditions where the country is “guided by its national interests.”

The President also discussed the topic of higher education reform and assured students that the changes will not affect the recognition of new-style diplomas obtained while studying in trial programs. According to Putin, changes in the educational system will occur smoothly and without radicalism.

In 2022, after the start of the military operation in Ukraine, Russia was excluded from the Bologna process. After this, the Kremlin announced a reform of higher education. The Bologna system unites the European academic space and allows the automatic recognition of bachelor’s and master’s degrees in countries that participate in the process.
