Lawyers are faced with a large number of requests from citizens seeking protection from the misuse of their personal data online, the Kommersant newspaper reports. According to the publication, most often Russians are worried about passport data, tax identification number and other personal information that has become publicly available.
According to lawyers, solving a problem often does not require a citizen to go to court. It is enough to write to the owners of the website where confidential information with personal data is posted, or contact Roskomnadzor with an official statement. Usually these actions are enough, experts emphasize.
Last year, the number of requests to law firms regarding the safety of personal data, including passport and banking data, increased by approximately 10-15%, according to a report from the BVMP law office. At the same time, citizens ask lawyers to help remove information, since they did not consent to its publication on open sites or forums and do not know how to get out of the situation on their own. Often, the information contained on online portals discredits the honor and dignity of a citizen.
In 2023, Roskomnadzor recorded 168 cases of leaks of personal information of network users. There were about 300 million records on the Internet. A year earlier, the numbers were no better – 140 leaks and 600 million records. The State Duma then called for tougher penalties for legal entities for violating laws on personal data.
According to statistics from the Center for Legal Assistance to Citizens in the Digital Environment of the GRCHTs (a division of Roskomnadzor), the number of citizens’ requests to the organization increased by 82% and amounted to 3,270 applications for the entire last year. However, 759 of them were related to data leaks.
