The UK will impose sanctions against the Houthis in the coming days. This was stated by Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Rishi Sunak during a speech in the House of Commons on January 23, Reuters reports. According to the British Prime Minister, London is preparing to cause significant damage to the financial chains that allow the Houthis to attack ships in the Red Sea area.
The United Kingdom intends to cut off Yemen’s Ansar Allah rebel movement from arms, including through force. Sunak stressed that London is in constant contact with allies in Washington. The British side is discussing foreign policy and diplomatic steps in the Middle East with their American colleagues.
Sunak also said that the UK is firmly committed to ensuring regional security and maritime stability. To do this, according to the British Prime Minister, London, together with its allies, needs to disrupt the supply of ammunition and weapons to the Houthis in the near future.
Let us recall that the conflict in the Red Sea region escalated in early January due to attacks by radical Houthi groups on international ships. The escalation occurred against the backdrop of the war between Israel and Hamas. The Houthis support Hamas radicals, while Britain acts as an Israeli ally. In addition, London supports the United States and its partners in the operation against the Houthis. Members of the international coalition include Spain, France, the Netherlands, Italy, Bahrain, Norway and the Seychelles.
Hamas attacked Israel on October 7 last year. In response to the attack, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced the launch of an anti-terrorist operation in the Gaza Strip.
