The European Union faces debts of almost 7.5 billion euros due to arms supplies to Ukraine

The European Union (EU) has become a debtor to countries that supply weapons to Ukraine. The total external debt of the EU is 7.61 billion euros, El País newspaper reports, citing sources and a document from the European Community External Action Service (ECBC).

According to the newspaper, Brussels has allocated €5.5 billion for weapons and ammunition for Ukraine since February 2022. At the same time, according to official ECBC documentation, the debt to partner countries for military assistance amounted to €7.16 billion. These funds are spent on the military needs of Kyiv.

In addition, the EU is creating a specialized fund, which is aimed at financial assistance to Ukraine and training of the Ukrainian military. Brussels wants to spend 5 billion euros every year to support the work of the fund. The project involves a constant increase in the size of the fund every year until 2027.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Brussels is in this way trying to circumvent Hungary’s veto on the allocation of military-economic assistance to Kyiv. European officials are hoping to avoid Budapest’s blockade by bypassing the allocation of special tranches to finance arms supplies.

Let us remind you that Hungary consistently opposes military and financial assistance to Ukraine. Budapest regularly blocks collective decisions to allocate funds to support Kyiv. In addition, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has repeatedly spoken out against European integration and Ukraine’s further entry into NATO. According to Orban, the EU needs to conduct a dialogue not only with Vladimir Zelensky, but also with Vladimir Putin.
