Former Spartak footballer Evgeny Lovchev spoke about the large number of Latin American legionnaires in the RPL, in particular the Brazilians in Zenit St. Petersburg.
“I would talk not only about Zenit and not only about the Brazilians. The business logic is clear: Europe, with rare exceptions, is closed to us, so we bring those who want to travel from Latin America. But I think that not everything is so easy there either. When I managed the mini-football team Spartak, I also had a lot of Brazilians on my team – four people. And I must say that for all their cheerful disposition, dealing with them was not the easiest story. But everything was balanced by the fact that they played football well.
But this is one side of the issue. She is extremely cynical. Zenit has money – more than the rest. There is a goal that they are pursuing at any cost – to repeat Spartak’s result in the number of victories in consecutive championships. And I must say that St. Petersburg manages money effectively, the foreign players for the RPL are of high quality. Years later, only a line will remain from the championship. And questions about the number of Brazilians and foreigners in general will begin only if there is no championship – who was brought, for what money and why are there so many foreign players? Because with such capabilities and such equipment, second place for Zenit will be a failure,” Lovchev was quoted as saying by the All About Sports publication.
