In Russia, the number of female sterilization operations has jumped. The indicator reached a 16-year record against the background of a decrease in the number of abortions performed by Russian women, Rosstat recorded.
As the Medvestnik publication writes, citing information from the statistical collection “Healthcare in Russia—2023,” if in 2010 12.5 thousand women underwent sterilization operations, then in 2022 – already 15 thousand. At the same time, the figure is 100 thousand for 15-49-year-old women in 2010 was 33.4, and in 2022 – 44.6.
According to statistics, in 2010 the number of abortions in the Russian Federation was almost 1.186 million, and in 2022 about 504 thousand were registered. The media notes that the number of abortions in Russia has been declining since the early 1990s – by an average of 6% per year. At the same time, private clinics account for a fifth of all abortions performed in the country.
Earlier, a discussion began in the parliament and among experts of the Russian Federation about measures to limit abortion, including a ban on such a procedure in the country. Against this background, private clinics in the Kursk and Lipetsk regions, as well as Crimea, refused to perform abortions, and in Mordovia and the Tver region, administrative liability was introduced for “inducing” abortions.
Note that the sterilization procedure in the Russian Federation is allowed to be carried out by women and men who have reached 35 years of age and have at least two children. The exception is medical indicators.
