The premiere of the charity performance “The Leningrad Nutcracker” will take place on January 12 at the Carnival theater and concert complex on Nevsky Prospekt. As the press service of Smolny told RosBalt news agency, the first to see the production will be children from large families, cadets, children from orphanages and children of participants in a special military operation.

The performance, based on the military-historical tale of the same name by Denis Nefedov, is dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the complete liberation of Leningrad from the fascist blockade.

“Very soon, on January 27, our city, together with the whole country, will celebrate an important historical date – the 80th anniversary of the Leningrad Victory. We are very seriously preparing to celebrate this anniversary. We will honor our veterans, hold conferences, patriotic events, exhibitions, and sports and cultural events. In total, 233 events are planned in the city for this sacred date. Our duty is to preserve and pass on the memory of the unprecedented feat of the city residents to future generations. The play “The Leningrad Nutcracker” is a way to tell children the heroic story of the defenders of Leningrad, among whom were not only people, but also our little brothers,” said Governor Alexander Beglov.

The plot of Nefedov’s book is based on a real story about cats sent in 1943 from different parts of the USSR to Leningrad, surrounded by enemies. Animals saved city residents from dangerous diseases caused by rat infestations.

Actors from the Moscow Institute of Theater Arts named after People’s Artist of the USSR I.D. Kobzon and the Moscow Art Theater will perform for young spectators. Children will also receive New Year’s gifts.

The project is organized by the government of St. Petersburg, ANO IC “Victoria Peter”, ANO “Keepers of the Times”. The performance will be held with the support of the Presidential Fund for Cultural Initiatives.

Also, 1,400 copies of the book “The Leningrad Nutcracker”, the preface to which was written by Alexander Beglov, will be donated to school and city libraries in St. Petersburg.
