Janusz Majewski is dead. The director died on the night of January 9-10 at the age of 93. The sad news was shared on Facebook by the Polish Filmmakers Association, of which he was the president for many years.

“It is with great sadness that we inform you that Janusz Majewski died tonight. One of the most famous, respected and popular Polish film directors. Master of genre cinema, screenwriter, writer, academic lecturer. Winner of the ‘Platinum Lions’ Special Award for lifetime achievement at the 41st Gdynia Film Festival (2016), the Polish Filmmakers Association Award for outstanding artistic achievements and contribution to the development of Polish cinematography and the Polish Film Award ‘Orzeł’ for Lifetime Achievements. A long-time president of the Polish Filmmakers Association involved in the affairs of the Polish film community,” we read in the post.
The creator was born in 1931 in Lviv. He graduated from the Directing Department of the National Film School in Łódź, and then obtained the academic title of associate professor of film art. He was awarded the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta and the Gold Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis. Since 2012, he has been the rector of the Warsaw Film School.

Majewski made his debut as a director at the turn of the 1960s. Throughout his career, he made films such as “CK Dezerterzy”, “Zaklęte Rewiry”, “The Criminal Who Stole Crime”. He also became popular thanks to the 1980 series “Królowa Bona”. One of the director’s last works was the documentary film “Jazz Outsider” from 2022, about Adam Jędrzejowski, a jazz drummer who collaborated with the band of Krzysztof Komeda and Andrzej Trzaskowski.

In October 2023, the Polish Filmmakers Association organized a very popular Janusz Majewski retrospective, in which he participated personally every day. In In November, he was Roman Polański’s guest at a screening of his films at the Kultura cinema,” we read in the SFP memoirs.
