On January 3, environmental and indigenous rights activist Nina Gualinga called a press conference to discuss, in addition to the physical and psychological violence she was subjected to by her ex-partner, the fight she has been fighting since 2015 to seek justice in the courts of Earth.
On January 5, a preparatory and assessment hearing for the trial of her husband was scheduled in Pastaza. What Nina Gualinga is saying is a reflection of the revictimization to which those who suffer gender violence are subjected; In addition to physical aggression, they have to repeat again and again the scenes they experienced in front of the authorities, in long processes that many end up leaving due to exhaustion and psychological damage, and others who are less fortunate are even killed.
In 2015, Nina Gualinaga filed an official complaint with the Violence Department of the Pastaza Prosecutor’s Office for physically abusing her ex-partner, and although she received a sentence for helping, the violence did not stop.
Until 2020, the judicial system did not suit him. At the age of 27, he wrote a letter in which he decided to leave the country. She states that this did not end her suffering, as the threats to her and her family continued, so she filed another lawsuit for the criminal offense of mental violence.
Regarding the latter, a hearing is scheduled for January 5 in the Department for Violence against Women, in the Pastaze Judicial Council, in Puy.
The Minister of Women and Human Rights announced on the social network the National Council for Gender Equality also announced that it had “activated its harmonization process” and made similar requests.
The judiciary must listen and quickly resolve these cases. The regime must listen to them without having to become the media. Nina Gualinga must be the beginning and the key so that women do not become victimized again or continue to be attacked. (OR)
