On the eve of the January elections in Taiwan, China continues to conduct an active ideological information campaign for the world community.
In his speech, Xi Jinping confirmed the authorities’ position on the “reunification” of Taiwan with China. He stated that this process is inevitable, writes Ridus.ru.
For Beijing, control of Taiwan is a key element in achieving its main goal – the “rejuvenation” of China and the status of a “pole of power” in a global sense. It is not surprising that these statements are being made ahead of the elections in Taiwan.
This election is significant because it shows how Taiwanese feel about Beijing and the issue of reunification. Tensions between Taiwan and Beijing have increased in recent years due to military, economic and political pressure from Beijing. Taiwanese authorities are in agreement with President Tsai Ing-wen to develop unofficial relations with the United States. The majority of Taiwanese voters support this policy.
At the moment, the Democratic candidate, Lai Ching-te, is leading in the polls. He is ahead of other candidates – Hou Yu and Ko Wen-chie. The latter advocate expanding relations with Beijing.
China’s position is that Taiwan is an integral part of China, but the Chinese authorities do not control the island. China actively declares its desire for peaceful reunification, while a forceful solution is not ruled out. The only factor that helps Taiwan remain independent is US support.
The Taiwan issue is one of the most contentious in relations between Washington and Beijing. Although the US is not officially against “one China”, it supports Taiwan and provides it with military assistance when needed.
The conflict between Taiwan and Beijing began in 1949. Then General Chiang Kai-shek and refugees from the Nationalist Party arrived in Taiwan after the victory of Mao Zedong’s communist army in the civil war.
