In St. Petersburg, the level of wastewater treatment reached 99.8%

In St. Petersburg, the implementation of a comprehensive program to stop the discharge of untreated wastewater into water bodies of the Northern capital continues. Over the past few years, specialists from the State Unitary Enterprise Vodokanal of St. Petersburg have implemented a number of large-scale environmental projects.

As a result, thanks to the reconstruction of treatment facilities and the commissioning of new collectors, the level of wastewater treatment in St. Petersburg reached 99.8% by the end of 2023.

“In his message to the Federal Assembly, the President of Russia stated the need to improve the environmental situation in the country. The head of state noted that the regions need to continue working to improve the health of water bodies, including our Neva. We have achieved good results in this direction. The environmental situation in the waters of the Neva and the Gulf of Finland has noticeably improved. The problem of dumping untreated wastewater is being solved in a comprehensive manner – through the development and modernization of water supply and wastewater systems. By 2030, we plan to achieve 100% wastewater treatment,” said Governor Alexander Beglov.

Environmental projects consistently implemented by the city water utility have made it possible to significantly reduce the load on the water area of the Neva, the Gulf of Finland and the Baltic Sea as a whole.

As part of the city program to stop the discharge of untreated wastewater into city water bodies, from 2003 to 2023, more than 360 direct outlets of untreated wastewater with a flow rate of more than 600 thousand cubic meters per day were switched into the municipal sewerage system.

Among the main activities carried out are the completion of the first stage of construction of the Okhtinsky collector in 2020; switching in 2021 to the Central aeration station of the treatment plant of the Metallostroy village; cessation of the discharge of household wastewater into the Slavyanka River in 2022.

In 2023, Vodokanal continued to implement measures that were important for protecting the environment and the health of St. Petersburg residents. Thus, construction of a sewer collector is underway on Petrovsky Island. The implementation of this project will eliminate direct discharges into Zhdanovka and Malaya Neva and ensure 100% treatment of the island’s wastewater. In addition, construction of a sewer network has begun to switch direct discharge in the city of Kolpino.

Another important project for the city is the second stage of reconstruction of the Northern Wastewater Treatment Plant, one of the largest wastewater treatment plants in the city. As a result, the station’s productivity will reach 1 million cubic meters of wastewater per day
