He protests in defense of the media, and he edited a prison magazine. The past of the program director of TV Republika

Holidays – a time of reconciliation? Not when it comes to the “defense” of the Polish media, which involved former employees of TVP and TV Republika. Among the occupants of the building at Pl. The insurgents also included the program director of the second station, whose past was extremely colorful. Professional experience? Editing a letter in prison.

“The fight continues, but they are already great” – one can sarcastically write about the revolutionaries on Pl. Insurgents who illegally occupy the building of the Polish Television and the Television Information Agency. In addition to the protesting former TVP employees and those friends with TV Republika, several or several dozen supporters of the previous form of public television gather around the building every day. Support also came in the form of the program director of a right-wing station, whose biography sounds really interesting. More information about public media can be found on the home page.

Witold Newelicz has been the program director of TV Republika since April 2021, and previously he was the head of the newsroom of the right-wing station. Tomasz Sakiewicz, editor-in-chief and vice-president of television, justified his nomination in an interview with the “Press” portal: He has extensive life experience and great political knowledge. He went from a man who was at the very bottom to a man who started to fight against what he was doing,” said a frequent guest of TVP news programs in recent years.

“Recidivists”, or a prison magazine. “He kept my spirits up”

And indeed, Newelicz’s experience is enormous, but not in the field of the journalist’s profession. In 2004, the “Chemist from Krakow”, as he was called, was arrested and sentenced to 5 years in prison. Reason? production of “Polish” heroin from poppy straw and amphetamine. However, after serving his sentence, he was returned to prison for a year due to an attack on a police officer.

Newelicz was not idle while serving his sentence in the prison in Strzelce Opolskie and became involved in journalistic activities and edited the prison magazine “Recidivists”. When asked about him, Telewizja Republika replied that he conducted “patriotic education among inmates and kept their spirits up.”

“You see the mote in your neighbor’s eye, but you do not see the beam in your own eye.” Double morality

Of course, every person has the right to make mistakes and redeem themselves, but his being appointed program director at a right-wing station may come as a surprise. After all, Witold Newelicz’s only journalistic experience is as part of resocialization behind prison walls. From the right side of the political scene, we often hear lectures and talk about “double standards”, so let’s at least demand them from the authors of these words.
