The dictionary says that sainete is a humorous dramatic work, of a popular character. It was a session of the National Assembly to hear the request, also witty and ill-intentioned, of a judge seeking approval for the criminal prosecution of the former vice-president of the Republic (Jorge Glas), knowing that this request refers only to the acting vice-president, and whose purpose is to prevent those officials from be hindered in fulfilling the tasks entrusted to them by the nation.

The task for the conspiratorial assemblies was simple, since it was just the opposite of what the order of the day said, that is, the 92 votes needed to approve such a prosecution should not be obtained; a pantomime in which each of the blocs could wash their hands of voting for whatever they want and then say that the request for criminal prosecution has failed and that, therefore, the former vice president cannot be prosecuted.

The President of the National Assembly (Henry Kronfle), apparently in order not to commit himself to something clearly illegal, entrusted the chairing of the session to the first vice-president (Viviana Veloz), but this made things more complicated, because the official Who knows that this will result in a violation of the law, the Constitution, is obliged is to prevent it, which he did not do. This does not justify him to later declare that the resolution of the National Assembly has no value.

For what the National Assembly did, the saying is applicable that there is no greater shame than that which is done under the pretext of defending the law. That’s what legislative agreements did to protect the former vice president from a new embezzlement charge by the state’s attorney general, Diana Salazar.

As the authors of the farce knew that the citizens could not accept that maneuver – because it was not – they decided that the former vice president should simultaneously take refuge in the Mexican embassy and request asylum, claiming that he was politically persecuted.

Ecuador’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as required, provided the Mexican Embassy with the necessary support to confirm that the former vice president was under investigation for ordinary, non-political crimes. But according to the Caracas Convention of 1954, in its fourth article, “it is up to the State of asylum to classify the nature of the crime.” If Mexico grants him asylum, it will be up to Ecuador to grant him the appropriate passage to leave the country.

The judge of the State Court who sent the question to the National Assembly – the judge who is also being investigated by the Prosecutor’s Office in the case of Metastasis, which I called the “mother of all wars” – accepted that his question was invalid. and convened a hearing to indict the former vice president for embezzlement in the reconstruction of Manabi.

It could be said, without declaring a final victory, that the state attorney can continue with her fight, which has more and more followers every day. As you can see, the fight has tireless opponents and new obstacles will appear every day that will have to be overcome. (OR)
