For decades we did not know the truth about Cinderella. Only recently was the true color of her hair and dress revealed

The Disney team assigned to remake older cartoons into new resolutions noticed that many animation fans did not know the real colors used by the creators. Supposedly, most viewers of “Cinderella” watched a copy of the original from 1950, which differs in colors.

Eric Goldberg, who has been working as an animator and director of Disney cartoons for years, talked about the phenomenon. The creator got a chance to work on the restoration of “Cinderella”. His priority was to fix the colors. According to the animator, many viewers still do not know what one of the studio’s most popular characters looked like.

“For years, Cinderella didn’t have the right colors,” laughs Goldberg, quoted by polygon.com. “Her hair in fairy tales is dusty blonde and the dress seems silver,” says the creator, emphasizing that his first goal was to take care of these two details. “For years we’ve been shown that Cinderella’s hair is the color of cheese sauce and her dress is light blue. We’ve seen all sorts of things that don’t add up,” Goldberg reports.

Kevin Schaeffer, director of restoration at Walt Disney Studios, cannot find a reason why the colors in “Cinderella” were so distorted. The creators decided to stop copying copies of the material and went to the source, i.e. the original materials from 1950. While making the video suitable for 4K resolution, they also improved the colors.

“Eric brought graphics from the archives that showed what the hair color and the original dress looked like,” Schaeffer reports. “It was extremely helpful. We were able to figure out what Cinderella was supposed to look like and get her back to her original appearance.”

The team consisting of studio and animation department employees was extremely determined to take care of the smallest details. They carefully checked even the smallest animals and shapes in the dark. Goldberg in particular remembered working on the Gus-Gus mouse T-shirt.

“In previous versions it was mustard yellow. In the original it is green. We brought that color back. It’s very, very important for us to stick to what Mary Blair put in her concept art,” notes Schaeffer.

Schaeffer and Goldberg hope to be able to similarly polish other films in the Disney library. The creators would like to renew “Sleeping Beauty”, “Alice in Wonderland” and the original “Fantasia”. What happens when they finish? Schaeffer is convinced that the technology will then go even further and the process will have to be repeated again.
