The leader of the Belarusian opposition Svetlana Tikhanovskaya commented on the verdict on her husband, blogger Sergei Tikhanovsky.
In an appeal on her Telegram channel, she called the prison term assigned to him illegal and promised to continue to protect the person she loves and who “has become a leader for millions of Belarusians”.
“I will try to do something very difficult, perhaps impossible, in order to bring closer the moment when we will see him in the new Belarus,” the politician said.
Tikhanovskaya also wrote on Twitter that “the dictator publicly takes revenge on his strongest opponents.”
“By hiding political prisoners in closed trials, he hopes to continue the repression in silence. But the whole world is watching. We will not stop, ”the message underlines.
The Gomel court sentenced Sergei Tikhanovsky to 18 years in prison, found him guilty of calling for violence against the authorities and preparing mass riots. The blogger tried to run in the 2020 presidential elections, but the Central Election Commission refused to register him.
The oppositionist’s lawyer has already announced his readiness to appeal the verdict.
