NYT: The White House has begun urgent negotiations on the use of frozen Russian assets to help Ukraine

The administration of US President Joe Biden has begun urgent negotiations with allies about using frozen Russian assets to help Ukraine. According to TASS, material about this was published by The New York Times with reference to American and European officials.

According to the newspaper’s interlocutors, the United States “began urgent negotiations” against the backdrop of the fact that the US Senate cannot approve a new aid package for Kyiv, and funds are running out. As the publication notes, the White House is “quietly signaling” its support for the use of frozen Russian funds.

Negotiations between finance ministers, central bankers, diplomats and lawyers have intensified in recent weeks as Washington puts pressure on Western countries to present a strategy by February 24. Earlier, the Financial Times wrote that the United States is proposing to transfer frozen Russian assets to Ukraine with the help of tranches from the World Bank and the EBRD.

Concerns about the transfer of Russian assets to Kyiv, according to the publication, were expressed by Germany, Italy and France. An unnamed European official who spoke to the newspaper explained this by saying that the US only owns a small share of the assets, and “the EU has much more to lose.”
