Oscars 2024. The Film Academy omitted “Peasants” in the shortlists. But Poles still have a chance to win the prize

The American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the Oscar shortlists. We got to know the titles that will compete for nominations for the next awards. Unfortunately, the Polish film “Chłopi”, an adaptation of the novel by Władysław Stanis³aw Reymont, our dark Oscar horse, was not included in the ranking of announced productions that have a chance for next year’s Oscars.

The 96th awards gala will take place on March 11, 2024. Next year, the event will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, famous for his TV show. Then we will find out which films deserve the distinction according to the Academy.

However, before the stars appear on the red carpet, creators and fans of their works are waiting for nominations. The final list of films that will have a chance to win the statuette will be announced on January 23. Today we already know which titles appeared on the so-called shortlists.

In September, we learned that the Polish candidate for the Oscar would be DK Welchman and Hugh Welchman’s film “”. The film’s producers submitted the work to five Oscar categories – including “Best International Film” and “Best Animation.” After making this decision, the creators of the production tried to reach as many people as possible with “Peasants” whose vote will count when choosing the nomination – declared Sean Bobbitt, one of the film’s producers, in an interview with Gazeta.pl.

Unfortunately, the film was not on the Oscar shortlist. “The Peasants” has no chance of winning an Oscar for the best international film, but the question of nomination for the best feature-length animated film remains open. Three other productions co-created by Poles can win the award. We are talking about the documentaries “From Where to Where” (Polish-French-Ukrainian documentary directed by Maciej Hamela), “Apolonia, Apolonia” (Polish-Danish documentary by Lea Glob) and “Strefa biznes” (American-British-Polish war film by Jonathan Glazer).
