Russian Ambassador Oleg Malginov was summoned to the Uzbek Foreign Ministry and expressed concern about the statement of the Russian writer, co-chairman of the A Just Russia – For Truth party Zakhar Prilepin at a conference at the Rossiya Segodnya press center with a proposal to annex the territory of Uzbekistan to Russia.
The day before, Prilepin said: “I sincerely stand for the fact that the territories from which migrant workers are coming to us should simply be annexed and they should be taught the Russian language on the spot.” At the same time, he added that he was “not joking” and intended to “continue to promote the topic of disavowing documentation about the collapse of the USSR”: “Who will forbid us to do anything useful on Eurasian territory after the parade in Kiev?”
“Such kind of thoughtless statements by party leaders of such a friendly country as the Russian Federation, unfortunately, do not correspond to the spirit of a comprehensive strategic partnership and alliance between the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Russian Federation,” the Uzbek Foreign Ministry said. They also noted that such statements “are provocative in nature and can negatively affect relations between peoples,” RBC reports.
The Russian ambassador, in turn, said that Prilepin’s words “don’t even remotely have anything in common” with the official position of the Russian leadership regarding Uzbekistan. He also emphasized that “in his country the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Uzbekistan have never been questioned.”
