St. Petersburg residents who helped Ukrainian scammers were detained

A group of people who helped telephone scammers from Ukraine were detained in St. Petersburg. This was reported by official representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Irina Volk.

She clarified that four defendants were detained, two of whom turned out to be local residents. According to Volk, the Ukrainian accomplices of the detainees called the Russians from specially equipped call centers and introduced themselves as employees of the Central Bank. The victims were told that foreign devices were allegedly connected to their personal accounts, as well as about fraudulent transactions on their accounts.

As a result, Russians were convinced to install malware that allowed scammers to remotely control all applications on their smartphones. Then they ordered expensive electronics using someone else’s money and sold them through free classifieds online services. The money was transferred into cryptocurrency assets and sent to Ukrainian employers, Volk added.

According to her, the police established the involvement of the detained defendants in at least 30 episodes. The police identified the criminals, and during the searches, 16 million rubles, several dozen new mobile phones, over a hundred bank and SIM cards, telephones, and laptops were confiscated from them.

Criminal cases have been initiated.
