Most Russians plan to spend the New Year holidays within the country. According to RT, approximately 80% of Russians plan to vacation in various Russian cities, with Moscow, St. Petersburg and Sochi leading the way. Experts explain this by increasing affordability of prices and improving the infrastructure of domestic resorts.
The online hotel booking service Ostrovok.ru reports that in the period from December 23, 2023 to January 14, 2024, about 85% of travelers plan to stay in hotels in Russia, while only 15% will choose a holiday abroad. The trend continues in airfare bookings, with about 78% of bookings coming from domestic flights and 22% from international flights, according to OneTwoTrip analysis.
The most popular destinations were Moscow (25.6% of bookings), St. Petersburg (11%) and Sochi (7.4%). But there is also noticeable interest in Nizhny Novgorod, Murmansk, Tula and Pskov, as well as in the routes of the Russian North and the mountains of Elbrus, Dombay, Belokurikha, Sheregesh and Arkhyz.
The leaders in foreign destinations are the United Arab Emirates, Thailand, Egypt, Turkey and Sri Lanka.
However, despite the attractiveness of foreign trips, they are much more expensive than vacations within Russia.
