Some members of Generation Z decided not to have children due to a pessimistic view of the future. Business Insider founder and columnist Henry Blodgett considers this point of view to be biased. He argues that procreation is not the only way to lead a fulfilling life.
Blodget urges not to explain the abandonment of offspring by climate change, economic turmoil or other temporary reasons, writes Ridus.ru. In his opinion, every generation of people faces certain problems. However, the current world is in many ways less dangerous and uncertain than the past.
Comparing the quality of life of people using various factors (life expectancy, income level, health, risk of dying a violent death, the state of medicine, public consciousness), one can notice that the world is getting better, the expert believes. For example, over the past two hundred years, the proportion of people living below the poverty line has fallen from 76 to 10%, and infant mortality has fallen to historically low levels. There are other positive trends.
Of course, there are problems – climate change, violence, disease, inequality and environmental damage. However, Blodgett reminds us that every generation has always had its problems, and they need to be solved. He cites the example of the fear of nuclear annihilation that dominated discussions in the 1960s, and notes that this risk still exists but has been averted over the past half century. He also notes that other problems were more pressing in the past: smoking, alcohol, cars, drugs and unsafe manufacturing processes.
Blodgett said he is grateful to his parents for overcoming their fears and bringing him into this world. He encourages Generation Z to consider having children and emphasizes that life is a gift.
