WHO: Omicron strain identified in 77 states and likely to have penetrated most countries by now

Cases of the omicron-strain of covid have already been reported in 77 countries. This was stated by the Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

According to him, Interfax reports, the omicron strain may have already penetrated into most countries, where it has not yet been identified. Gebreyesus noted: despite the fact that there are few severe cases of omicron disease, the number of infections is growing rapidly. And this can lead to congestion in hospitals.

Recall that the new strain of coronavirus B.1.1.529, which contains 32 mutations in the S-protein, was first identified in South Africa and Botswana in early November. The infected were found in Hong Kong, Belgium, Israel. At an emergency meeting on 26 November, WHO recognized B.1.1.529 as “of concern” and named it omicron, after the 15th letter of the Greek alphabet.

Omicron has a large number of mutations, it also spreads faster than the delta type. A new strain of coronavirus with increased mobility has been found in more than 55 countries, including Russia.

US health experts believe the omicron is yet another sign that the current pandemic, which has killed more than 5 million people, is not over yet, moreover, the omicron is a dress rehearsal for the next pandemic.
