Budapest did not object to the decision to start negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU, since it will have more than 70 opportunities to block the process of Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, said Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
According to him, the main argument of the leaders of other countries at the summit “was that Hungary, by approving the start of negotiations, loses nothing, since the last word on the issue of Ukraine’s membership in any case should be given by the parliaments of 27 countries, including Hungarian,” Interfax reports.
“If we do not want Ukraine to become a member of the EU, then the Hungarian parliament will vote against it. Yes, and until this issue reaches parliaments, there will be a very, very long process. According to calculations, there will be about 75 cases when the Hungarian government can stop this process,” the Hungarian Prime Minister noted. According to him, if during negotiations on Ukraine’s membership there is “something that will harm the interests of Hungary,” he will stop the process.
“I have made it clear that I will not hesitate for a second if Hungarians pay the price for the financial and economic consequences of this bad decision. Those who made this decision should pay for this, not Hungarian citizens,” Orban emphasized.
Let us recall that on December 14, the EU countries decided to begin negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova on their accession to the EU.
