January frosts and heavy snowfall will continue in the capital. Leading specialist at the Phobos weather center, Evgeny Tishkovets, warned about this, Moscow 24 reports.
He noted that during December 14-15, about 30% of the monthly precipitation will fall in Moscow. Moreover, over the past day, 2 to 4 millimeters of precipitation have already fallen in the city, so the height of the snow cover is from 31 to 40 centimeters, which is almost 2.5 times higher than normal, the forecaster noted.
According to his forecast, January frosts will continue on Thursday. Temperatures will reach -10 degrees on average. Heavy snowfall will begin in the evening, which may reduce visibility to 200 meters at night. “A repeat of the daily precipitation record set in 1966 is likely, when 17.3 millimeters fell into precipitation gauges,” added Tishkovets.
He emphasized that this is not “the snowfall of the century” and “not stones from the sky,” but simply a good snowfall, which happens from time to time in the Russian winter.
At the same time, Tatyana Pozdnyakova, a specialist at the Meteonovosti news agency, added that surges in atmospheric pressure are also expected in the capital. According to her forecast, the pressure will decrease throughout Thursday, and its minimum will occur in the middle of the day on December 15, it will be 742 millimeters of mercury. Then the pressure will begin to increase again at the same speed.
