The Ambassador of the European Union in Chisinau, Janis Mažeix, said that the process of resolving the Transnistrian conflict should take place in parallel with the integration of Moldova into the European Union. The diplomat called Moldova’s accession to the EU without Pridnestrovie possible, but undesirable, Interfax reports.
“Yes, you can, but we hope you won’t,” the ambassador said in response to a question from a local TV channel journalist. “We hope that these processes will take place in parallel. While Moldova will negotiate accession with the EU, at the same time it will work on the reintegration of the country. Because we work with Moldova within its internationally recognized borders, and therefore with the Transnistrian region as part of it,” Mazeix emphasized.
At the same time, he added that “Moldova should not become a hostage to solving a rather complex problem – the Transnistrian settlement.” “Therefore, we do not exclude that the process of integration into the EU will take place in several stages,” Mazeix explained, noting that this issue will be discussed at negotiations between Chisinau and Brussels.
Let us recall that in November, Moldovan President Maia Sandu admitted the possibility of the republic joining the European Union “in two steps – first the right bank of the Dniester, and then the left.”
