Is the risk of dying from cancer reduced by taking vitamin D? Opinion of doctors and scientists

Regular vitamin D intake helps prevent cancer deaths

Scientists have been studying the relationship between vitamin D intake and cancer for many years. D₃ deficiency has been found to be particularly common among cancer patients. Researchers were able to collect a lot of data proving the antitumor effect of D₃ and the presence of a direct connection between its level in the blood and the incidence of certain types of cancer.

For example, Italian researchers found that women with sufficient levels of D₃ in their blood are less likely to develop breast cancer. And American scientists have proven that a synthetic analogue of vitamin D, EB1089, inhibits and suppresses prostate adenocarcinoma cells.

Scientific studies conducted in 2018 showed that D₃ has no effect on reducing the incidence of cancer, but reduces the risk of developing cancer. Research has found that taking vitamin D reduces the risk of developing advanced cancer by 17% in obese people, and up to 38% in non-overweight people.

When taking vitamin D daily, the risk of cancer mortality is reduced by 12%

Recent studies by German scientists have shown similar results. Specialists from the German Cancer Research Center studied 14 scientific papers on the survival and mortality of cancer patients, in which more than one hundred thousand people took part at different times. As a result, they were able to find out that if you take vitamin D supplements daily, the risk of mortality from cancer is reduced by 12%.

Scientists explained this fact by the regular bioavailability of the hormone 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D₃, which is produced only when taking medications with D₃ on a daily basis. This substance, according to researchers, can reduce tumor growth and suppress its growth.

Svetlana Zvereva, nutritionist with higher pharmaceutical education, expert of the German manufacturer of dietary supplements LR:

“Various studies indicate a close connection between the level of vitamin D in the blood and the development of cancer. For example, Japanese scientists conducted a randomized trial of 417 patients with gastrointestinal cancer, which showed that five-year disease-free survival was higher in the group receiving vitamin D. Subgroup analysis also indicated that patients with 25(OH)D levels within 20 – 40 ng/ml had higher disease-free survival. A meta-analysis based on five studies also confirmed an association between higher blood levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D and a lower risk of cancer death. For the most reliable protection against cancer development, it is recommended to maintain blood calcidiol levels at 60 ng/ml or higher.”

Studies have shown that regular intake of vitamin D reduces the incidence of metastatic cancer and helps prevent cancer-related mortality.
