In Kyiv, six metro stations were flooded due to erosion

In the Kiev metro there was a washout between the Teremki and Demievskaya stations, RBC reports with reference to a message from the Kyiv city administration. For safety reasons, the decision was made to close six stations in the southern part of the Blue Line.

According to Ukrainian media, the tunnel depressurized at the erosion site and water poured onto the metro rails. According to journalists, among the possible causes of flooding are violations of safety regulations (insulation) during the construction of the tunnel, the activity of the Lybid River, and floating boats.

The administration’s statement states that “due to uneven processes of decompaction, vibration creep around the soil mass and the load on the tunnel frame, there is a risk of loss of stability of tunnel structures.”

The mayor of the city, Vitaliy Klitschko, arrived at the site of the erosion in the tunnel, at the Demievskaya metro station. He said train traffic on the section had been suspended so “safety always comes first.” Duplicate ground transport routes were launched in the area of closed stations. According to Klitschko, a total of 77 buses and 20 trolleybuses will be launched.

According to preliminary calculations, restoration work will last about six months, the Kyiv administration reports.
