In the fifth season, Kellie Martin joined the cast as Lucy Knight, a third-year medical student and resident of John Carter, played by Noah Wyle. The production needed a young and inexperienced hero who was just taking his first steps in a fictional hospital. But starting work on the set of the series loved by millions was not easy for Martin. For several months she accompanied her sister suffering from lupus to the hospital. When she made her debut in the production, she was in mourning.

– My sister died a week before I went on set. It was a bad period in my life, Martin recalled in an interview. As she admitted, she was a “wreck of a human being” at the time and because of what she had experienced, she was unable to fully immerse herself in the character she played in the series. Although viewers liked Lucy Knight, the writers and producers eventually came to the conclusion that it would be better if she was removed from the cast. The remaining actors learned about how it would end and that Martin was leaving , only when they received the script for the thirteenth episode of season six. – They came up to me on set and asked: “Everything will be fine, right?” And I replied: “No, it turns out not. It won’t be good,” she revealed.

In the episode, Lucy and Dr. Carter are attacked by a schizophrenic patient. The man first stabbed Lucy several times and then attacked John while the others were having fun at a Valentine’s Day party. Just before Carter loses consciousness, he notices Lucy lying in a pool of blood. Dr. Kerry Weaver (played by Laura Innes) finds the injured, and although she and Dr. Elizabeth Corday (Alex Kingston) tried to save Lucy’s life, she dies. Carter survived, although the attack left him with kidney problems and became addicted to drugs. And the viewers? They were left devastated and shocked. No one expected what would happen in the episode.

Kellie Martin admitted that filming the final scenes of the series was extremely difficult for her.
