The man first stabbed Lucy several times and then attacked John while the others were having fun at a Valentine’s Day party. Just before Carter loses consciousness, he notices Lucy lying in a pool of blood. Dr. Kerry Weaver (played by Laura Innes) finds the injured, and although she and Dr. Elizabeth Corday (Alex Kingston) tried to save Lucy’s life, she dies. Carter survived, although the attack left him with kidney problems and became addicted to drugs. And the viewers? They were left devastated and shocked. No one expected what would happen in the episode.
Kellie Martin admitted that filming the final scenes of the series was extremely difficult for her.
