Prime Minister of Ukraine Denis Shmygal called on citizens to reduce electricity consumption due to the observed capacity shortage in the country’s energy system, TASS reports.
“Our energy system is currently experiencing a power shortage. <…> Now the government and energy workers are calling on everyone to reduce their electricity consumption. Especially from 9:00 to 19:00 (from 10:00 to 20:00 Moscow time). Do not turn on powerful electrical appliances at the same time. Transfer washing to night hours. Turn off the lights in rooms you are not using,” he said, emphasizing that Ukrenergo is now forced to attract emergency assistance from Europe, and this is “an emergency measure, and not always guaranteed.”
Shmygal believes that shopping centers, shops and restaurants can also reduce the “intensity of lighting of signs and storefronts.” “Enterprises can reconsider their production process from the point of view of energy efficiency,” added the Ukrainian Prime Minister.
In his opinion, such measures will avoid the introduction of forced power outage schedules.
Earlier on December 7, the national energy company Ukrenergo reported that the country was forced to urgently import electricity from Poland, Romania and Slovakia to avoid blackouts and maintain balance. The difficult situation in the Ukrainian energy system led to this.
