Chairman of the Board of Zenit Alexander Medvedev said that due to bad weather in the last rounds of the current RPL season, the question arises regarding the return of the Russian championship to the previous holding system: “spring – autumn” instead of the current “autumn – spring”.
“On the one hand, football in bad weather is a game in its non-classical presentation. But on the other hand, all teams are in the same conditions, and you only need to complain about yourself. But there is a discussion about the return of “spring – autumn”. I would like to note that a couple of stadiums with roofs would allow us to optimize the calendar and eliminate matches in bad weather,” RB Sport quotes Medvedev.
A little earlier, Deputy General Director for Sports Development of Zenit Andrei Arshavin also stated the need to return to the previous system of holding competitions: “I don’t want to say the same thing, like a woodpecker. I already said this 10 years ago and even when it was changed. I am definitely in favor of returning to “spring-autumn”. The main argument is that in the summer in our country we need to play football as much as possible.”
Since the 2011/2012 season, the domestic championship has been held according to the “autumn-spring” calendar system. The season begins in the second half of summer and ends in May – early June. Let us note that the transition to this system was made for the sake of teams participating in European competitions. However, now, due to the disqualification of Russian football by FIFA and UEFA, European Cup tournaments have become inaccessible to Russia for a long time.
