Felinologists have finally explained why a cat goes to the toilet past the litter box

Some owners have had to deal with a situation where a cat that previously regularly went to the litter box suddenly begins to make mistakes, or even simply discharges its needs next to the litter box or in other places in the apartment. As felinologist Tamara Ivanova said, there may be several reasons for this behavior.

Changing the litter can turn a cat away from the litter tray – for example, an animal that previously regularly used wood or clay litter begins to ignore silica gel litter. In this case, the pet may not like the fact that the litter pricks its paws or hisses when it gets wet.

Also, Ivanova points out, some cats suddenly begin to separate big and small tasks – and they need two trays. In addition, a cat may walk past the litter box if it becomes too small for her, and also when the owners are late with cleaning. Another reason is the animal’s puberty, which begins to mark its territory.

In the cases described, the solutions to the problems are quite obvious. However, there are situations when toilet failures are associated with health problems.

“The cat may suffer from difficulty urinating or defecating: she simply cannot go to the litter box. And the animal, suffering from pain, begins to look for a more comfortable surface – soft or, conversely, smooth and cool. And if no visible changes are observed with the filler, the size of the pot or the maturation of the animal, and the cat is worried and sits down in an attempt to go to the toilet in the wrong places, you should immediately contact a veterinarian,” advises the felinologist.
