In the fall of 2003, a crazy comedy with a Christmas theme appeared on cinema screens: “Love Actually”. The love story about a married couple who are trying to be separated by the main character’s secret admirer not only became a classic of the genre, but also brought fame to the young Keira Knightley. The actress played the role of charming Juliet when she was only 18 years old. After almost 20 years, Richard Curtis confessed that if he were to make the same film again today, he would not cast the role of his new wife.
Richard Curtis wouldn’t hire Keira Knightley again
Years later, the director of “Love Actually” came to the conclusion that the age difference between the 18-year-old and the actors playing the roles of their admirers was too great. Chiwetel Ejiofor was 26 at the time and Andrew Lincoln was 30. “We probably wouldn’t hire someone as young as Keira now,” Curtis told LADbible. “On the other hand, I’m thrilled that Keira was cast because I thought she was perfect. I don’t think she played a teenager in the movie, it seemed like she was around 23,” he added.
These aren’t the only changes Richard Curtis would make when reshooting Love Actually. The director admitted that the film not only lacks sexual and racial diversity, but also contains unpleasant jokes about the weight of one of the characters.
The role in “Love Actually” opened the door to a great career for the young Keira Knightley. After appearing in the Christmas comedy, she began working on a series of pirate films. We are, of course, talking about the blockbuster “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl”.
