European Commissioner for Transport: Polish authorities must stop blockade of checkpoints on the border with Ukraine

Polish authorities must enforce the law on the border with Ukraine, where giant queues of trucks have accumulated due to the fact that checkpoints are blocked by Polish truckers. This statement was made at a press conference in Brussels by Member of the European Commission for Transport Adina Valyan, Interfax reports.

“There is not enough goodwill there to find a solution. And there is not enough participation from the Polish authorities. I say that because they are the ones who have to enforce the law on this border,” she said.

According to her, EC representatives were involved in the situation from the very beginning of the events at the border and “tried to talk with all parties involved.” Valyan emphasized that citizens have the right to organize demonstrations, but “Ukrainian carriers cannot be held hostage due to lack of political will.”

“The list of measures that must be taken has been published; the Polish authorities need to agree with them and apply them. We continue the dialogue, but reserve the right to intervene, in particular in the event of a violation of EU laws by those who do not comply with the rules,” concluded the European Commissioner for Transport.

Let us remind you that Polish carriers began protesting on November 6 at three checkpoints on the border with Ukraine. Later they blocked all four checkpoints in the Podkarpackie and Lublin voivodeships. At the same time, they demand that the country’s authorities limit what they claim is unfair competition from Ukrainian transport companies.
