The head of the traffic police said that motorists will not be fined for not having winter tires.

The head of the Russian State Traffic Safety Inspectorate, Mikhail Chernikov, said that the police will not punish drivers for not having winter tires, but motorists are required to independently take measures for safe driving, Interfax reports.

Commenting on the question of the need to change tires according to the season, Chernikov emphasized that “State Traffic Inspectorate employees will not fine or punish anyone.” According to him, “every vehicle owner must prepare his car himself so that he can safely drive on the roads in certain winter conditions.”

The head of the traffic police also noted that the use of all-season tires, the so-called Velcro, is possible at any time of the year. “There are no restrictions on these tires; you can drive all-season,” he said.

Chernikov emphasized that in many regions of our country “there is no winter slipperiness or snowfall at all,” so in these regions there is no need to control drivers. The head of the department also noted that if the driver does not have car tires “for the season,” the vehicle “is not delayed or evacuated.”

“But the driver must choose the appropriate conditions for moving on. He must move in safety – this is the most important thing,” summed up Chernikov.

According to current legislation, a fine of 500 rubles is provided for the lack of winter tires.
