Hungary called Ukraine’s entry into NATO in the near future “unthinkable”

Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Economic Relations of Hungary Peter Szijjártó

NATO members agree on the issue that Ukraine’s entry into the alliance is now “unthinkable”, since it leads to the risk of unleashing a third world war, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó said at a press conference, which he held during a break between meetings of the foreign ministers of the alliance countries. The minister published a video of his speech on social networks, RBC reports.

Szijjártó also expressed the opinion that NATO should “rethink its unsuccessful strategy towards Ukraine, but most members, despite the lack of success, are not ready to do so.” “We hope that the decision we made more than a year ago still stands – namely, that everything must be done to prevent NATO from becoming involved in the conflict, and that everything must be done to avoid a direct clash between NATO and Russia,” the diplomat said, noting that none of the alliance members proposed abandoning this decision.

A proposal to revise the NATO plan for Ukraine, he clarified, was made by Hungary and Turkey. “This plan was for Ukraine to defeat Russia on the battlefield, which would cause political consequences in Russia. I think today everyone sees – although they may not admit – that this plan has failed,” Szijjártó said, adding that some participants in the alliance meeting “quietly and timidly” admitted that expectations from the Ukrainian counter-offensive did not live up to expectations.
