“Scythian gold” arrived from the Netherlands to Kyiv. RIA Novosti reports this with reference to the Allard Pearson Museum in Amsterdam.
The media notes that local customs has begun processing the collection. In the Treasury of the National Museum of Ukraine, customs officers will identify the “gold”.
The Kremlin, however, believes that the collection should be in Crimea, since it belongs to the peninsula. This statement was made by presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov, RBC notes.
“It’s time to stop regretting this,” the head of Crimea, Sergei Aksenov, wrote on Telegram, commenting on the message about the transfer of treasures to Kyiv. He added that the transfer of “gold” to Ukraine was obvious. In his opinion, it will most likely fall into “private hands.” “It was clear that they would not return it to us, without any options, because both the West and Kyiv do not care about the law, about legal norms. It’s time to stop regretting this, throwing ashes on your head, and so on,” Aksenov noted.
Note that since February 2014 the treasures have been in the Netherlands. The gold was sent to the exhibition “Crimea. Golden Island in the Black Sea” to Amsterdam in 2014, and after the peninsula was annexed by Russia, it never returned. Since then, there has been a dispute about the ownership of the collection between Ukraine, Crimea and the Allard Pearson Museum.
On November 22 of this year, the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine announced that the Netherlands will transfer “Scythian Gold” to Kyiv – a collection of 2 thousand items. Back in 2016, the Amsterdam District Court ruled that the “Scythian gold” belongs to Ukraine.
